Egypt welcomes Trump’s offer to mediate Nile Dam dispute

(MENAFN) Egypt has expressed support for US President Donald Trump’s proposal to mediate the ongoing disagreement with Ethiopia over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on the Nile River, according to reports.

On Saturday, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi confirmed that he had responded to a letter from Trump, reiterating Egypt’s concerns regarding water security in relation to the GERD.

Sisi stated that he appreciates “Trump’s attention to the central importance of the Nile River issue for Egypt” and emphasized that Cairo remains committed to “serious and constructive cooperation with the Nile Basin countries, based on the principles of international law, in a manner that achieves shared interests without causing harm to any party.”

The GERD, officially inaugurated by Ethiopia last September, is the largest hydroelectric dam in Africa. Ethiopian authorities highlight that the $5 billion project is vital for expanding electricity generation in Africa’s second-most populous nation, where nearly half the population lacks reliable access to power. Addis Ababa maintains that the dam will not negatively affect downstream countries.

Egypt, which depends on the Nile for roughly 90 percent of its freshwater needs, has warned that the uncontrolled filling and operation of the dam could significantly reduce water supplies, particularly during drought periods. Sudan has also voiced concerns about the safety of its dams and irrigation systems if water releases from the GERD are not properly coordinated.
