Canada Signals Stronger Partnership with Hungary’s Incoming Leadership

(MENAFN) Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has expressed a commitment to strengthening relations with Hungary’s newly elected leader, Peter Magyar, following his recent electoral victory.

In a statement released after a phone conversation between the two leaders, Carney congratulated Magyar on his “decisive” win and highlighted the longstanding ties between the two countries. The statement noted that, “As NATO Allies, commercial partners, and with over 320,000 Canadians of Hungarian heritage, the prime ministers underscored the strength and immense potential of the Canada-Hungary relationship.”

During their discussion, both sides explored opportunities to deepen cooperation across key sectors, including trade, business, and energy, as Canada continues to expand its engagement with European partners.

Security and defense were also central topics, with both leaders agreeing on the need for closer coordination in these areas. The statement added that they “emphasised closer collaboration on security and defence, including in defence procurement through the European Union's Security Action for Europe (SAFE) initiative.”

They also addressed the ongoing war in Ukraine, stressing “the importance of achieving a just and lasting peace,” and agreed to maintain regular communication moving forward.

Magyar’s victory follows parliamentary elections in which he secured a clear lead over incumbent Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who later acknowledged the outcome, stating: “We will serve our nation from the opposition.”
