Deadly Landslide at Central African Republic Gold Mine Leaves Several Missing

(MENAFN) According to reports, at least eight artisanal gold miners have been killed following a landslide at a mining site in western Central African Republic, with several others still unaccounted for.

The incident occurred at the Konyeme mining site in Nana-Mambere prefecture, where the collapse reportedly happened in the early hours of Tuesday while miners were working underground. A local lawmaker representing the area said the site was still under development when the ground suddenly gave way, burying workers beneath rubble.

Rescue operations were launched shortly after the collapse, with teams recovering eight bodies so far while continuing efforts to locate additional missing individuals. Local reports suggest that around a dozen people may still be trapped or unaccounted for.

Authorities indicated that the victims included both local residents and foreign nationals involved in artisanal mining activities.

The tragedy follows a similar deadly incident in the same region earlier this year, when a separate mine collapse resulted in the deaths of more than 20 people, highlighting ongoing safety risks in informal mining operations across the area.
